Building a Hearth

For our new home, we wanted to install a new pellet stove. We had a pellet stove in our old home for over 10 years and really enjoyed it. They are easy to load, easy to start, have very nice heat, and can still be used when the power is out with a simple battery backup.

Our new home had a propane heater insert that was not large enough to fit the pellet stove, so we modified it. 

We purchased flagstone from a nearby landscaping store. The stone varied in size and shape, with the thickness ranging from about 1″ – 2.5″. The amount of stone we used for this project cost about $50-$55. We also purchased a bag of blended mason mix type S which cost about $7.25. Everything else we used for this project was from scraps laying around the house.

So in total, the hearth cost us about $63.

This was my first time setting stone.
